Results
During the 2008-2009 academic year, dedicated 826 tutors, volunteers, and staff members worked with over 22,000 students in seven cities across the country. The time spent with students was divided among 826’s four main areas of programming:
After School Tutoring
Throughout the year, 826 National was proud to have 1021 different volunteers helping local students with their homework after school. In 1,303 drop-in tutoring sessions, 1,231 unique students were given individual attention in completing their schoolwork, with most students attending drop-in tutoring sessions three to four times per week.
- Amongst our students in free after school tutoring programs, 90% felt that 826 tutoring helped them to do better in school and 93% felt they could get help with specific homework problems at 826.
- Amongst the parents of the students in our after school tutoring programs, 92% reported that their child completed all of their homework at 826 in comparison to 44% reporting their children completing all homework when not at 826.
Field Trips
Because of the hard work of 1378 volunteers, 459 individual field trips were offered throughout the year. As a result, 365 teachers were served across 310 schools (95% of which were public,) with each of their classes being welcomed into an 826 chapter for a day of high-energy learning. In total, 11,258 students spent part of a school day with us last year.
- Of teachers surveyed nationally after bringing their students to an 826 field trip, 99% said that 826 field trips are a valuable learning opportunity, that students were challenged during the program, and that they'd like to bring their students back for another field trip.
In-Schools Projects
Last year, 223 different in-school projects were completed in 68 different schools. More than 160 teachers and 6,882 students were served during 1,321 sessions by 877 dedicated volunteers.
- Of the teachers surveyed nationally about their experiences with 826 In-Schools Projects, 100% said their students were engaged in the project, their students worked hard during the project, that 826 is a good resource for teachers, and that they would like to partner with 826 again.
Workshops
Over the course of the year, 860 sessions of 346 unique workshops were held, thanks to help from 931 volunteers. In these workshops, 2,886 students finished 515 writing projects.
- Of 840 students surveyed nationally after attending an 826 Workshop, 82% said that activities made them think hard about writing, while 79% reported that writing was more interesting to them because of the workshop.
