Eleventh Grade: Empty
by Kylie Perry, age 17
Published in Small Things Can Grow Tall
I skipped school more than I attended. I stayed back in eleventh grade. My family didn’t care because my two older brothers had dropped out. I went back anyway. It was easy in a way, because I wanted it for myself. It was also hard because I didn’t have to. Does that make sense? Nobody was there when I came home, to tell me I was doing the right thing; so why did I keep going to school? These days, when I arrive to my house, it looks empty. Nobody is there. Nothing hangs on the walls. No family pictures. Even the fridge is empty. At least the classroom is full.
