Second Grade: Tell Her About The Birds
by Philip Bautista, age 17
Published in Small Things Can Grow Tall
This year was going to be different. I could feel it as I walked into my new school. I made a lot of friends that year, but there was one special girl that gave me butterflies. Just seeing her smile would turn those butterflies into a flock of birds. I liked feeling the birds in my stomach. I did anything it took to make her laugh, throwing pencils at the teacher behind her back or making fart noises when a student bent down to pick up a pencil. I didn’t care that the other boys would try to make fun of me for defending her when she didn’t ask for it. The teasing had a limit, and fists didn’t have any language barriers. Unfortunately, she moved to New York before I ever got to tell her about the birds. With happiness, pain is sure to follow.
