Once, there was a broom named Kid who lived in Aisle 2 of the grocery store. Kid wanted to be penguin. He wanted to be a penguin because he loved penguins— where they lived, it was nice and cool, and the island was made out of flavored shaved ice you could eat.

Kid went to fishing school, which taught both fishing and regular school like math and spelling and reading and science and social studies. He was going so he could learn how to fish because his dad was a fisherman and he wanted Kid to do what he did. Fishing ran in the family. Read the entire piece...

“My dad was a fisherman,” Kid’s dad said, “and his dad was a fisherman. And so on, and so on.”

Kid’s mom was a scientist, and she studied micro-animals in the oceans, seas, and other bodies of water. Things like fungus, too.

Every morning, she would say to kid, “Have a good day at school by the water.” After school, when Kid got home, he would lay down on the couch with a big ufflll sound, and his mother would ask, “What was it like at fishing school by the water? Did you see any micro-animals?”

One day at his fishing school, Kid’s teacher asked, “Do you know what 6x6 is?” and he said “Yes.”

"Then what is it?"

"36," he answered.

Suddenly, a kid named Nerdy Ferdy started to talk to the broccoli trees, who were outside hanging in the ice cream shop, where they were eating cookies ‘n’ cream, twist, and chocolate-and-peanut butter ice cream.

He said, “I’m 11 years old and I have two people in my family.”

The broccoli trees said in a sassy voice, “Why would we need to know that?”

The nerd replied, “I thought you wanted to go out with me?”

"In your dreams!" said the broccoli trees.

There was a girl that Kid knew, here name was Celery. Celery liked mac ‘n’ cheese out of the box. She had a brother named Pea who was older and washed cars for a living. And she had a sister named Corn who chopped down trees for a living.

Celery also had a mom and a dad who were writers and liked to write about animals and wildlife. Celery dreamed about being an athlete who won medals and received awards.

One day, Celery got into a cart with Kid and went to the ice cream aisle to eat some ice cream. Then they went to the freezer aisle and got some water and put it on the floor. Kid and Celery froze the water and started to skate on the frozen water, eating ice cream out of the cartons at the same time. They were doing circles and swerves and the two of them were really happy.

At the end of the day, they went to go watch the sunset in the valley. When the sun set, Kid and Celery looked at each other and got closer and closer until their lips touched. After that, they just looked back at the sunset, feeling happy and weird, blushing.
